On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, Armenia’s highest leadership visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex on 9 December. This was reported by Armenpress.
Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan laid flowers at the eternal flame immortalizing the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
It should be noted that on 11 September 2015, during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Resolution 69/323, submitted by Armenia, was adopted unanimously, proclaiming the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. The initiative stems from the provisions of the resolution submitted by Armenia and adopted unanimously at the 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 27 March of this year, concerning the prevention of genocide. These resolutions emphasize the necessity of commemorating the victims of genocide, which plays an important role in the work of prevention. The UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted on 9 December 1948. The aforementioned resolutions and the high-level events of the international day complement Armenia’s ongoing efforts to promote and consolidate international action against the crime of genocide.
