The statue of Armenia’s National Hero, singer, songwriter and public figure Charles Aznavour is to be placed in the central section of France Square, where Rodin’s sculpture currently stands.
The decision was taken at the Yerevan Council of Elders’ session of 15 March. Deputy Mayor Tigran Avinyan noted that Auguste Rodin’s statue of Jules Bastien-Lepage is to be moved to another section of France Square.
A replica of the monument is also to be placed in Paris.
“Taking into account that we also have the question of moving Auguste Rodin’s statue of Jules Bastien-Lepage to a more visible and observable section, it was proposed to place Charles Aznavour’s statue precisely in the central section of France Square, and to move Auguste Rodin’s statue of Jules Bastien-Lepage to a section closer to the sidewalk of the same square.
In addition, the current circumstance of the sculpture being placed in the centre of France Square does not allow the public to properly view or study the valuable work, which is also provided for in the sculpture’s donation agreement,” said Avinyan.
