The Government of the Republic of Artsakh, in a statement it issued, announced that, taking into account the unhealthy environment created by the Azerbaijani “eco-activists” (“environmentalists”) and their attempts to mislead the international community, a decision was made to appeal to international organizations. To that end, the operations of the Kashen mine will be temporarily suspended.

“The Government of the Republic of Artsakh once again reaffirms that mining in Artsakh is carried out in accordance with the highest international standards, to which the regulations established by the sector’s legislation have also been aligned. Taking into account, however, the unhealthy environment created by the ‘eco-activists’ of the neighboring country and their attempts to mislead the international community, a decision has been made to appeal to international organizations to conduct an international environmental audit in connection with the activities of the ‘Base Metals’ company.

In conjunction with the company’s management, a joint decision has been made to temporarily halt the operation of the company’s mine until the completion of the audit.

The Government of the Republic of Artsakh has appealed to the relevant UN structures and other international professional organizations to organize the implementation of the audit within a short timeframe.

The Government of the Republic of Artsakh has always been an advocate of maintaining the best international standards in the mining sector and is convinced that international environmental standards must be applicable to all mining companies in the entire region,” the statement said.

It should be noted that the ‘Base Metals’ company is the operator of the Kashen copper-molybdenum mine located in the Martakert region.
