Today we join the Armenian communities in Canada and around the world in honouring the memory of the victims of one of the darkest pages in the history of humanity — the Armenian Genocide. We also pay tribute to their descendants, including Armenian Canadians, who have contributed and continue to help build the strong, diverse country that we enjoy today. This is stated in the declaration of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the Genocide.
“The atrocities that took place between 1915 and 1923, and the horrifying number of victims, must never be forgotten. In 2015, 100 years after the tragedy began, Parliament adopted the motion declaring April 24 as a day of remembrance for the victims of the Armenian Genocide, a date that since then reminds us of the losses, the wounds, the pain, and guarantees that these atrocities will never be repeated.
Hatred and violence must never again be met with indifference. Each of us must play our part in ensuring that such cruelty never happens again.”
