I Am Ashamed That the United Kingdom Has Not Yet Recognized the Armenian Genocide: Baroness Caroline Cox

Baroness Caroline Cox, member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, has called on Great Britain to recognize the Armenian Genocide. “My first message is one of thanks and gratitude to the Armenian people, who have always been champions of freedom for the whole world,” said Caroline Cox.

According to her, Armenians have continued to remain committed to the preservation of universal values, despite great sacrifice and immense suffering, living alongside neighbors who have no respect for human rights and democracy.

“You are like a beacon of light in a very dark part of the world,” she said.

The Baroness’s second message is about anger.

“The international community continues to leave Turkey and Azerbaijan unpunished, which continue to violate human rights and organize massacres,” she declared.

Cox spoke about three genocides, noting that the first took place in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire, while the other two were carried out against Artsakh — during 1990-1994 and during the war at the end of 2020.

“The last war was full of war crimes. The independent international organization ‘Genocide Watch’ characterized the last war as genocide,” she said, emphasizing that while all commemorate the memory of the Armenian Genocide, new genocides continue to be carried out in the world to this day. “Again and again I call on the government of the United Kingdom to recognize the Genocide. I am ashamed that it has not yet happened,” emphasized the Baroness.

She noted with satisfaction that Wales, which is part of the United Kingdom, has already recognized the Armenian Genocide. Moreover, a monument dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide has been erected in Cardiff, the capital of Wales.

“My third message is about love and friendship. I have had the honor of visiting your country 85 times. Many of these visits took place during the previous Artsakh war. Together with my colleague David Thomas, I also visited during the last war. We always return, admiring your people, your courage, your hospitality, culture, your commitment to democracy. It is difficult to recall another country of comparable size that has made a similar contribution to universal civilization in the fields of art, culture, education and others. I promise that we will always be by your side. We will do everything possible to achieve the justice you deserve,” concluded Baroness Caroline Cox.
