On 18 September, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan received the delegation headed by Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, who had arrived in Armenia on an official visit. The official reception was followed by a private Simonyan-Pelosi meeting. The interlocutors then joined a discussion in an expanded format.
During the press conference with the President of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan, Pelosi announced that a resolution condemning Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia is being prepared in Congress, co-authored by Congressman Adam Schiff. She is also one of the co-authors of the resolution recognising the Armenian Genocide.
Speaking about the meeting with the President of Armenia’s Parliament, Pelosi unequivocally condemned Azerbaijan’s latest attack on Armenia.
«Our meeting was truly important, because we focused on the illegal and deadly attack by Azerbaijan on the territory of Armenia, which we strongly condemn in the name of Congress; that attack hinders the prospect of a much-needed peace treaty. The United States, as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, has stated clearly and from the beginning that the conflict cannot have a military solution. We will continue to follow the events, we will continue to support a negotiated, peaceful and lasting solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict», – she said.
The Speaker of Armenia’s Parliament expressed gratitude to the United States «for the fragile ceasefire agreement» reached through Washington’s mediation on September 14. Alen Simonyan also spoke clearly about Yerevan’s expectations from Washington, emphasising the need to apply sanctions against Azerbaijan.
«Any assistance from the United States is of vital importance to our statehood. We believe that clear sanctions can become another lever to stop Azerbaijan’s expansionist aspirations and its authoritarian war against democracy», – said the President of the National Assembly.
«When we go to any country, security is important to us. We did not know that our visit would coincide with the days following military operations. In the United States we are proud to be surrounded by patriotic Armenians, who are also our citizens. They are our strength, an important component of our wholeness», said Pelosi.
