The government proposes to raise the conscription age by 1 year, setting it at 28 instead of the current 27.
While presenting the draft of corresponding amendments to the law “On Military Service and the Status of a Serviceman” and related laws in the National Assembly today, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Vahram Dumanyan stated that this necessity has arisen because students who have received deferments on the basis of academic achievements are often conscripted into the army without completing their postgraduate studies.
“This problem has arisen from the fact that the duration of general education has become 12 years, while 27 was determined at a time when general education still lasted 10 years. This leads to artificial solutions: in the second year of postgraduate studies, they tried to finish and defend the dissertation (thesis) by any means, so that this cycle (period) could be considered closed,” Dumanyan said.
The draft amendments to the law “On Military Service and the Status of a Serviceman” and related laws were adopted by the RA government in July of this year and sent to the National Assembly for discussion. Parliament adopted the package of bills in the first reading last week.
