International Community Must Curb the Ambitions of Azerbaijan’s Ally: Parliament

Azerbaijan’s adventurism, carried out with Turkey’s overt support, is a gross violation of international law and must receive the international community’s legal-political assessment. This is stated in the National Assembly’s statement regarding the condemnation of the military attack unleashed by Azerbaijan against the Republic of Artsakh on September 27. The draft statement, authored by deputies of the three parliamentary factions, was presented at the parliament’s extraordinary session by National Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan.

The statement notes, in particular: “The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia strongly condemns the attack and large-scale armed assault unleashed by the Republic of Azerbaijan against the Republic of Artsakh on the morning of September 27, 2020, which grossly violated the principle of resolving international disputes exclusively by peaceful means. These criminal actions of Azerbaijan’s military-political leadership, including the targeting of peaceful settlements with large-caliber weapons, indiscriminate attacks against civilian populations and settlements, the preceding attack in Tavush in July 2020, and the constant belligerent and Armenophobic rhetoric aimed at depopulating the Republic of Artsakh, once again demonstrate that Azerbaijan’s authorities are a real threat to the existence of the Armenians of Artsakh, to the security of the Republics of Artsakh and Armenia, of the entire Armenian people, as well as of the whole region. Therefore, all self-defensive actions of the Armenian armed forces are aimed at neutralizing this danger.” Through the statement, the deputies noted that conducting military operations against civilian populations, the elderly, children, and women is prohibited not only by international law, but also in all civilizations, in all world religions and faiths. They stressed that the international community is obliged to take active steps to curb not only the attack being waged by Azerbaijan, but also the continued ambitions of its ally Turkey to intervene in the Artsakh conflict, which would lead to extreme destabilization of the region, creating a direct threat to international peace and security. “This adventurism of Azerbaijan, carried out with Turkey’s overt support, is a gross violation of international law that must undoubtedly receive the international community’s legal-political assessment. We demand that things be called by their names, that the attack being carried out by authoritarian Azerbaijan against the democratic Republic of Artsakh be clearly recorded, and that a line be drawn between humanity and misanthropy.

The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia reaffirms that the Armenian side has always remained committed to the peaceful settlement of the conflict within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship, while, being the guarantor of the security of the Republic of Artsakh, it will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect the security and the expression of self-determination will of the Armenians of Artsakh”:
