16 July 2025
Dublin, Ireland
The ADL Armenian Rights Council expresses its deep gratitude that the lower house of the Parliament of the Republic of Ireland (Dáil Éireann), during its session of 16 July 2025, proposed a historic resolution officially recognising and condemning the Armenian Genocide.
In the resolution, the Irish Parliament calls on the government of Turkey to recognise the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in 1915, to face the historical facts, to come to terms with the past, and to ensure an open and transparent discussion of historical truths. At the same time, the Parliament notes that such official recognition can contribute to the normal development of relations between Turkey and Armenia and to peace in the region.
This initiative by the Irish parliamentarians who authored the resolution received political consensus as a step of historical responsibility towards recognising and condemning the Armenian Genocide at the state level, and towards preventing similar crimes in the future.
Reference was also made to further steps by the Irish Parliament, such as establishing a day of remembrance for the genocide, as well as specific bills aimed at overcoming the policy of silence.
In the resolution, the Parliament (Dáil Éireann) cited international legal foundations, referring to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the resolution of the European Parliament, the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, as well as official statements of European Union member states and other international legal documents.
This important resolution is a unique achievement for the Irish-Armenian community and for all Armenians, made possible thanks to the consistent efforts, meetings and programmes of the ADL Armenian Rights Council.
