It is out of the question that we make political decisions. This was stated today, 7 May, by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia, Arthur Davtyan, during a conversation with journalists at the National Assembly, responding to the observation that the prosecutor’s office very often initiates cases and submits motions for detention, say, in connection with the Syunik events, yet the courts release those individuals — whether the prosecutor’s office makes political decisions.
“The events that took place in this case were public, and any citizen can look, examine and understand whether the criminal proceedings and criminal prosecution in this regard are justified or not. Yes, we have disagreed with the overwhelming majority of the assessments given by the courts regarding the Syunik events, and we are now challenging them in higher courts.”
To the question of how it happens that the cases presented by the prosecutor’s office “collapse in the courts,” the prosecutor replied: “I do not agree with the assessment that the cases are collapsing. No case has collapsed; legal processes have their own logic. There is a situation where the investigator has made a mistake, there is a situation where the prosecutor has, there is a situation where the court has. My consistency lies in ensuring that in every case of omission we identify the person responsible.”
