In connection with the commemoration of the centennial of the Treaty of Sèvres in Armenia, the statement by Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs once again demonstrates “that country’s inability to face its past,” Anna Naghdalyan, spokesperson for Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted in her commentary.
According to Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is a matter of astonishment that Turkey’s current government, which “does not miss an opportunity to valorise the Ottoman heritage, displays such a nervous reaction to the commemoration of the Treaty of Sèvres signed between the Ottoman Empire and a number of states, including the Republic of Armenia.”
Anna Naghdalyan stresses that the Treaty of Sèvres was, is, and will continue to remain a historical fact that cannot be rewritten or erased.
“Turkey, avoiding facing its past and calling on others to ‘draw lessons from history instead of enmity,’ continues its traditional policy of justifying the Armenian Genocide and threatening the Armenian people with new crimes. Turkey’s steps aimed at undermining peace and security in our region, its belligerent stance toward Armenia, form part of the expansionist policy of Turkey’s current government to destabilise neighbouring regions. Only a revision of that policy and Turkey’s ability to face the past will pave the way for genuine reconciliation among the peoples of our region,” Naghdalyan stated in her response to the Turkish government’s statement.
