On April 24, the government will lay 105,000 flowers in everyone’s name at the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Deputy Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced this on his Facebook page.
He noted that the health restrictions in place during these April days to ensure public safety compel the finding of a new way to pay tribute to the memory of the Genocide victims.
“This year we will stay home and will not visit the Armenian Genocide memorial complex, but to ensure our symbolic presence we will take the following steps.
On April 23 at 21:00, under the tolling of church bells, we will turn off the lights of the squares and streets of Yerevan and the provinces. I call on you to also turn off the lights of your apartments and, by the window, to turn on the light of your phone flashlights. This action will receive its symbolic echo from Tsitsernakaberd, which you can follow on the live broadcast of Public Television or by turning your gaze toward the memorial complex.
On April 24, in the name of us all, the government will lay 105,000 flowers at the eternal flame of the memorial complex. Starting at 08:00 on the same day, citizens can send a message to the short number 1915 from Armenia, and to the number 0037433191500 from abroad, to confirm their remote participation in the meaning of the day. The names of the citizens who send a message will be reflected on the columns of the memorial complex,” he wrote.
Until April 25, 23:59 inclusive, for security and organisational reasons, the police will close the entrance leading to Tsitsernakaberd.
