Opposition… Against Whom? — Ramgavar Press Editorial

One of the most important components of political life is the concept called opposition. One of the most important components of political life is the concept called opposition.

The opposition is the body that criticises the authorities, points out their mistakes, and turns those mistakes into a political platform, whose long-term goal is, of course, to seize power.

Ultimately, it is any opposition itself that draws up its future plans and, after taking into account the situation prevailing in the country and the existing factors, develops a programme on the basis of which it advances its next steps.

Among all this, what is noteworthy is that for any opposition, the most important factor is the people.

The opposition works for the people and, thanks to the support of a people capable of becoming a political force, is able to move forward and achieve victories as powerful as miracles.

Such was the situation in Armenia in 2018, when no one — yes, almost no one — believed, or at least wanted to believe, that the authorities of that day in Armenia would be toppled and would be replaced by young, almost inexperienced, yet popularly backed national figures.

The key, then, if we pay attention, yesterday, today and tomorrow alike, is the people. Not only because the people of Armenia are a homogeneous society professing the same values and sharing the same ideas, but because the march of a people that rises up and struggles for its rights is impossible to stop.

These reflections are being written at a time when, in Armenia today, bringing together certain factors, remnants of the former government are trying to create a new field, whose main task and main occupation will be to wage a struggle against Prime Minister Pashinyan and the young authorities formed around him.

Perhaps these people have a serious problem with memory, and perhaps they have entirely forgotten under what circumstances, under what great wave of discontent and protest, the thousands of protesters in Yerevan shouted in one voice “Serzhik, get out,” believing not only in Pashinyan’s person and the cadres gathered around him, but first and foremost in their own strength, their own viewpoint and their own voice.

Of course, all that passed through great dangers, great anxieties and difficult fermentations, but at the end of that movement, once again and before the whole world, one idea was reaffirmed: that the will of the people is invincible.

And today the picture is the same. It is not that today’s authorities have a “magic wand,” or that in the space of a year and a half they have already managed to create for all of us the slogan of a “dream Armenia,” but it is nonetheless an established fact that, as yesterday, so today, the overwhelming majority of the people of Armenia show their unconditional support to the popularly elected Prime Minister.

Of course, there are, and there will be, people who, without reaching a proper analysis, are already disillusioned and have sat aside, but if we take into account the majority of the people, then once again we shall observe and acknowledge that the authorities who came to power on a wave of popular protest today still enjoy the support of the majority of the people.

Now the question arises: if opposition, then against whom…

Gentlemen, if what exists is opposition, or if all this noise is for the sake of the idea of opposition, then for whom?

Does one oppose one’s own people, or does one at least understand, reason and grasp that in a given place, whatever the strength of the conditions brought into play, it is impossible to fight against one’s own people, one’s own skin and one’s own idea?

The people are the great judge, and in all circumstances it is impossible to falsify the good will of that people, and the people are the ones who speak the last word; it is impossible to add a word to that speech or to falsify its entire essence and idea.

The greatest idea, gentlemen, is the people.

It is necessary to respect the will of that people and, ultimately, to understand and grasp that it is impossible to open fire on your own people.
