President Armen Sarkissian signed on 24 June the package of laws on making additions and amendments to the constitutional law on the “Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly” and on making additions to the constitutional law on the “Constitutional Court”.
This implies that the constitutional amendments adopted by the National Assembly will no longer be sent to the president for signature.
Vahagn Hovakimyan, a deputy of the “My Step” faction, referring to the draft constitutional amendments adopted in the second reading, had said that it is proposed to remove from part 7 of Article 86 of the constitutional law on the “Rules of Procedure of the NA” the words “is sent to the President of the Republic, who, upon receipt, shall sign it within a 21-day period”.
Now the Speaker of the National Assembly must publish the draft constitutional amendments within a 7-day period.
According to the amendments, the powers of Constitutional Court judges who have served for more than 12 years shall be terminated; Hrayr Tovmasyan shall leave his post and shall continue to serve as a judge.
