Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan congratulated the people of Artsakh on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Artsakh. Pashinyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
“On this day in 1991, Artsakh declared its independence from the Soviet Union. We congratulate on the occasion of this historic day — Free Artsakh,” noted the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
The Republic of Artsakh is 29 years old. On 2 September 1991, the joint session of the Mountainous Karabakh regional and Shahumyan district councils of people’s deputies declared the Republic of Mountainous Karabakh (RMK) within the borders of the former NKAO and the Shahumyan district. Thus, a right was realised that was reflected in the legislation in force at the time, particularly in the law adopted on 3 April 1990, which provided for the right of national autonomies to independently determine their own state-legal status in the event of a union republic seceding from the USSR. On 10 December 1991, just a few days before the official collapse of the Soviet Union, a referendum took place in Mountainous Karabakh, during which the overwhelming majority of the population — 99.89 percent — expressed itself in favour of full independence from Azerbaijan. In the parliamentary elections that followed, the RMK parliament was elected, which formed the first government.
