The possible recognition of the Armenian Genocide by US President Joe Biden is a step on the path to correcting a historical wrong. As reported by Armenpress, this was written by Jerusalem Post columnist Emily Schrader.
In her article, the author addressed the positive signals from the US White House toward recognizing the Armenian Genocide, emphasizing that Israel to this day refuses to recognize the crime committed against Christian Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.
“In Israel’s case, the government has refused to recognize the Armenian Genocide because of unstable but strategically political relations with Turkey. For decades, Turkey has threatened peoples, has threatened even when they have discussed the possibility of recognizing the Armenian Genocide,” wrote Schrader. She noted that while the former Israel had a dependency on Turkey as the only Islamic country with which it cooperated and had diplomatic relations, it has now been decades that Turkey displays an openly hostile attitude toward that country, under the leadership of the authoritarian and Islamist president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Today Israel has less dependency on Turkey, especially within the framework of its developing relations with Arab states. Nevertheless, instead of recognizing the Armenian Genocide and unequivocally standing on the right side of history, Israel’s government even today ‘sold out’ the Armenian people by selling weapons to Azerbaijan, so that that country would bomb Armenian cities,” the author stated.
The columnist wrote that the Armenian Genocide was the most horribly organized genocide the world had seen at that time. And it was not within the framework of war, but simply because the Armenians were Christian.
She considered it absolutely illogical that many countries to this day allow Turkey to use its geopolitical position to force them to renounce recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
“For decades, Turkey has actively censored those who have recognized the genocide and has even destroyed evidence. It has even imprisoned academics who have dared to call the Armenian Genocide a genocide.
While in Germany, which the world called to account, Holocaust denial is illegal, Turkey has made it illegal not to deny the Armenian Genocide, and the whole world has become complicit by allowing it to behave that way.
If even a small number of the world’s superpowers had recognized the Armenian Genocide from the very first day, today we would be living in a completely different reality, where smaller countries would not be afraid to recognize obvious historical facts.
Recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Biden administration will be a morally necessary message from the US not only to the people of Armenia, but to the whole world. The time for recognition is now,” Schrader concluded the article.
