It is evident that the Republic of Armenia, the land of Artsakh, and the entire Armenian people have, over the past two years, been subjected to the most serious geopolitical upheavals, the direct consequence of which has been the emergence of realities of complex developments.
We are all already aware that negotiations have begun aimed at reaching a regulation of relations between Armenia and Turkey.
It is logical, and perhaps even necessary, that countries in geographical proximity develop various relations, thanks to which not only are common interests strengthened, but polarisations and tensions are also reduced.
At the same time, in light of new global developments, it becomes apparent that the superpowers have fixed their attention on this given regional segment and are effectively dictating that Armenia and Turkey pursue the establishment of such relations.
The formation of diplomatic relations between the two countries, however, never signifies that all existing outstanding issues will be included in a package deal. At present, as at all times, there are numerous neighbouring countries that have developed various mutual relations, while many fundamental problems remain unresolved.
The improvement of certain relations between Armenia and Turkey in no way defines that all the issues concerning and affecting our people will be brought to a solution. The Armenian Cause and our claim (Pahanjadirutiun) exist and remain more pertinent than ever. Especially the Armenian diaspora, as a displaced and uprooted collective, must multiply all its efforts in that direction, preferably not only by keeping the homeland authorities informed about them, but also by coordinating them with them;
As regards the ongoing negotiations, our sole concern must be that all the essential interests of our people be scrupulously and fully guaranteed. Proceeding from this very zeal, it is necessary that we realise that the credibility of our negotiator – as well as of the homeland authorities – must be at its highest level, in the eyes of the world, but particularly before the opposing side.
During this period so fateful for our country and our people, it is the duty of all of us, as a nation, to demonstrate, with clear understanding, this vital sobriety.
Concomitantly, we must undoubtedly reflect that the daily repugnant atmosphere of distrust, accusations, condemnations, and mudslinging inevitably disappoints, discourages, and frightens away our new generation, particularly in the diaspora. This undesirable situation could, without doubt, be an irreparable loss for us if we do not succeed in resolutely preventing it.
The imperative demand of the present is that we create a conscious national unity, in order to prevent every lamentable and nation-harming mishap and calamity. Otherwise, the painful consequences of reckless courses of action could be very severe.
