On 23 January, Armenia submitted a memorial to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations against Azerbaijan, in the case concerning the interpretation and application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Armenia’s representative on international legal matters, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, wrote about this on his page on Twitter, noting that the document, prepared after about a year of preparatory work, presents in detail Azerbaijan’s gross violations of that Convention over the course of decades. The official did not mention any other details.
These claims generally relate to the recording of violations arising from Azerbaijan’s decades-long hatred and discriminatory treatment of ethnic Armenians and Armenian identity, and to compensation for the damage caused.
Let us recall that earlier, on 16 September 2021, Armenia had filed a complaint against Azerbaijan on the basis of the violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The Court had set a deadline for the submission of the full complaint and evidence until 23 January 2023.
