The Economist media company’s analytical center (Economist Intelligence Unit) has published the 2021 Democracy Index, according to which the planet’s states are classified into four groups: full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime, and authoritarian regime.

In compiling the report, experts take into account five fundamental factors: electoral processes and pluralism, government effectiveness, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties.

Based on their analysis, a given country receives an overall score and its place on the scale is determined.

Armenia is considered a country with a hybrid regime. Its score for electoral processes and pluralism is 5.5, government effectiveness 5.71, political participation 6.11, political culture 3.13, and civil liberties 5.

Thus Armenia has been given an overall score of 5.49, with which the country ranked 89th in the 2021 Democracy Index.

It should be noted that Armenia holds the best position in the region. Authoritative international human rights centers compile various reports every year on democratic processes, and very often Georgia is recognized as the leader in the region.

Meanwhile, in this report Georgia, like Armenia, is considered hybrid and, with an overall score of 5.12, ranks 91st. Turkey is also hybrid, with 4.35 points, and ranks 103rd.

The region’s three remaining states — Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran — are recognized as authoritarian.

Russia, with 3.24 points, ranks 124th; in a worse state is Azerbaijan, with 2.68 points, in 141st place. The last is Iran, with 1.95 points, in 154th place.
