Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, at Baku’s 8th Global Forum (“The World after COVID-19”), addressed relations with Armenia, making the following statement: “Azerbaijan has made a series of proposals to Armenia, work has begun on a peace treaty, because we intend to speak not of war, but of peace. However, unfortunately, this proposal has so far remained unanswered.”
Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan has also proposed starting the process of delimitation and demarcation of the border with Armenia, to ensure the territorial integrity of the two countries.
“All this conforms to international rules, but, unfortunately, this issue has not yet been resolved,” said Aliyev, who maintains that Azerbaijan is showing maximum constructiveness in the matter of regulating relations with Armenia.
He stressed that “we must look to the future and ensure it is predictable, and be ready for broad cooperation.”
Aliyev emphasized that the further development of the situation will depend on Armenia’s position.
“Our position is unequivocally clear: we are ready to begin peaceful negotiations and sign a peace agreement. We want to turn this page and determine the borders, but, as you see, there is no response from Armenia. One could say they have been silent for a whole year. I think they cannot withstand Azerbaijan’s constructive position,” said Aliyev.
