The Constitutional Court (CC) has three new judges.
The National Assembly on 15 September elected all three candidates — Yervand Khundkaryan, Edgar Shatiryan and Artur Vagharshyan. Khundkaryan’s candidacy was put forward by the General Assembly of Judges, Vagharshyan’s by the president, and Shatiryan’s by the government.
The two opposition factions did not participate in the vote, as they had announced the day before.
“The candidacy of Yervand Khundkaryan was put forward for the Constitutional Court, and the votes were distributed as follows: in favour — 84, against — 2. The candidacy of Artur Vagharshyan was put forward for the election of a Constitutional Court judge; there were 88 ballots in the ballot box, one of which was declared invalid, and the votes were distributed as follows: in favour — 86, against — 1. The candidacy of Edgar Shatiryan was put forward for the election of a Constitutional Court judge; his name was included on the secret ballot paper: in favour — 85, against — 3,” announced Vahagn Makuchyan.
The elected judges will assume their duties after the swearing-in ceremony in the National Assembly.
The vacancies in the CC arose following the adoption of the constitutional amendments in June, when Hrayr Tovmasyan was removed from the post of CC president and three judges who had served for more than 12 years lost their positions.
