Adam Schiff, Chairman of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, has appealed to the administration of US President Joe Biden regarding the incursion of Azerbaijani forces into the province of Syunik.
“I am deeply concerned by reports that Azerbaijani forces have, as reported, crossed into Armenian territory. If true, this is yet another dangerous and provocative action that could lead to further loss of life. It is time for the United States to recognize that our policies have encouraged Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to pursue military escalation, risking a new war,” wrote the US congressman on his Facebook page.
Schiff noted that military funding should not be provided to Azerbaijan, which “routinely engages in human rights abuses and tramples on the sovereignty of its neighbors.”
“I have been in communication with the Biden administration and urged them to engage more deeply through the Minsk Group, now more than ever. According to reports, Azerbaijan is undertaking these actions days after the State Department unjustifiably waived the restrictions provided under Section 907 of the [Freedom Support Act]. We should not provide military funding to a nation that routinely engages in human rights abuses and tramples on the sovereignty of its neighbors,” he wrote.
