On 24 August, during the day and until late at night, the Azerbaijani side actively and continuously fired barrages from positions located in the vicinity of Shushi, particularly toward the communities of Shosh and Mkhitarashen, at Armenian positions and the Armenian civilian settlements located near them. According to Armenpress, this was reported by the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Artsakh, Gegham Stepanyan.
Fragments of various types of weapons from the shots fired toward the Armenian positions located opposite the village of Mkhitarashen in the Askeran district reached the residential area of the village, and at around 22:00 on 24 August, the house of one of the community’s residents was damaged by shots fired from the Shushi section.
“Azerbaijan’s behavior proves once again that Azerbaijani positions located in the vicinity of civilian settlements must be situated at such a distance from the settlements that it would be impossible to keep civilian areas under direct observation and targeting, since they constitute an immediate and real threat to the life, health and other vital rights of the people of Artsakh, as well as their physical and mental integrity.
“The illegal actions of the Azerbaijani armed forces endanger the normal life and activity of the civilian population in the settlements that have become border areas.
“I once again emphasize the importance of introducing clear mechanisms for investigating incidents, which would make it possible to hold the perpetrators of incidents accountable and prevent their recurrence,” stated Human Rights Defender Gegham Stepanyan.
