The Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia’s Main Criminal Investigation Department of Particularly Important Cases continues the preliminary investigation of the criminal case opened regarding apparent abuses committed during the development and implementation of the “North-South Road Corridor” program.
It has been established that although according to legal procedures the selection of subcontractor organizations was to be carried out by the main contractor Spanish organization with the consent of the program’s architect and the relevant officials of the RA Ministry of Transport and Communication, in fact these processes were directed by Levon Sargsyan, brother of the third President of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, who served as ambassador at large, and who organized and carried out these processes together with Suren and Kevork Vardanyan, owners of the “POLITRANSPORT” company, which acted as a subcontractor in the program.
On the basis of sufficient evidence obtained during the preliminary investigation, a decision was made to charge Levon Sargsyan as a defendant under Article 190, Part 3, Point 1 and Article 311.2, Part 4, Point 2 of the RA Criminal Code. A search has been declared for him, and a motion has been submitted to the court to select detention as a preventive measure against him.
Suren and Kevork Vardanyan have been charged as defendants under Article 38-189, Part 3, Article 190, Part 3, Point 1, Article 38-205, Part 2, and Article 311.2, Part 4, Point 2 of the RA Criminal Code. A search has been declared for them, and detention has been selected as a preventive measure.
The preliminary investigation continues, and extensive investigative and procedural actions are being undertaken to uncover all the circumstances of the abuses committed during the implementation of the program, to identify the full circle of persons connected to them, and to bring them to criminal responsibility.
Notice: A person suspected or accused of an alleged crime is considered innocent until their guilt is proven in the manner prescribed by the RA Criminal Procedure Code, by a court verdict that has entered into legal force.
