The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck southern Turkey on Monday has reached 6,234. According to Armenpress, this was reported by the Anadolu agency, citing the words of Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.
At a press conference this morning, Oktay also reported 34,810 injured as a result of the earthquake. Some 5,775 buildings have collapsed, and more than 8,000 people have been rescued from the rubble.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency reported that 60,218 people are working in the earthquake-affected regions, including 3,200 rescue workers from 65 countries around the world.
All sporting events in Turkey have been postponed. Schools across the country will remain closed until 13 February, and in the 10 affected provinces until 20 February.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake also caused great destruction in Syria. The country’s Ministry of Health reported 1,250 dead and 2,054 injured.
