On the basis of a request to apply an interim measure submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) by the Republic of Armenia for the protection of the rights of the population of a number of settlements of the Republic of Artsakh, on 19 August the Court reaffirmed the interim measure applied on 29 September 2020 and further expanded on 3 November of the same year, noting that it remains in force. This was announced in a statement by the Office of the Representative of Armenia on International Legal Matters.
“The ECHR has called on the parties to refrain from actions that could lead to violations of the rights of the civilian population protected by the Convention (treaty), including putting at risk their rights protected under Articles 2, 3 and 8 of the Convention,” the statement said.
The Court also noted that the events cited by the Armenian government, namely armed attacks directed at peaceful settlements and threats of displacement of the populations of the Berdzor and Aghavno communities, fall under the decision issued on 29 September 2020 and remaining in force to this day.
