The second-largest group in the European Parliament, the “Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats” (S&D), has called on the European Union to impose sanctions against certain Azerbaijani officials. This was announced by the Standing Committee on European Integration of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.

“Given the seriousness of the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, we call on the European Union to impose targeted sanctions against those Azerbaijani officials who are responsible for the repression of the opposition and civil society in Azerbaijan,” the group’s statement said.

The group also noted that it is unacceptable for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to use the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in military tension in relations with Armenia as a pretext for the destruction of the remnants of political opposition in the country.
