On 23 July, at around 17:00, Azerbaijani armed forces opened fire towards Armenian positions located in the Gegharkunik section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the Armenian Ministry of Defence reports.
As a result of the intense exchange of fire, 3 servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia sustained light gunshot wounds. Their lives are not in danger.
“This was preceded by gunfire from the Azerbaijani combat positions themselves, which may have been caused by an incident of an interpersonal nature among Azerbaijani servicemen. This is also indicated by the fact that Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence states in its message that an Azerbaijani serviceman was killed after the Armenian side opened fire. The RA Ministry of Defence declares that it did not resort to retaliatory actions until the moment when Azerbaijan’s armed forces opened fire towards the Armenian position-holders,” reads the statement issued by the Armenian military department.
Armenia’s Ministry of Defence strongly condemns the latest provocation by Azerbaijan’s armed forces: “The entire responsibility for the escalation of the situation falls on Azerbaijan’s military-political leadership.”
