Nikol Pashinyan’s government, which came to power as a result of the “Velvet Revolution,” has the best opportunity in Armenia’s newly independent history to bring genuine democracy, stated Jonathan Katz, an analyst at the German Marshall Fund, during hearings organized by the Helsinki Commission of the United States Congress.
“Armenia needs to be helped to succeed, and this is not only important for Armenians. Armenia’s success is very important for the U.S. and the European Union, as an example in Eurasia and globally, that the victory of democracy is possible.”
Congresswoman Jackie Kanchelian-Speer, who had recently returned from a visit to Armenia and Mountainous Karabagh, noted: Armenia’s “Velvet Revolution” has once again given hope to all countries to establish democracy. At the same time, the congresswoman is convinced that the opportunity opened by the revolution is unique and that rapid reforms must be implemented. The United States must also show vigorous support to Armenia, Kanchelian-Speer is convinced.
“We must continue to support Armenia’s progress, help the government and the Armenian parliamentarians.”
There are broad programs of support for Armenia’s parliamentarians within the United States Congress, noted Congressman Frank Pallone, co-chair of the Congressional Armenian-American Friendship Group, during the hearings.
“I hope that through the efforts of both the Helsinki Commission and our group, it will be possible to show support to Armenia, develop the already recorded Armenian-American strategic dialogue, and promote the strengthening of democracy.”
According to Hamazasp Danielyan, a deputy of the “My Step” faction invited to the hearings, Armenia’s authorities have no illusions and are aware of all the difficulties on the country’s path of development.
“However, we are also aware that for our generation this is the last opportunity to accomplish the most important task of building a strong democracy in Armenia.”
According to Danielyan, only a democratic Armenia can face the challenges before the country.
