The resolution of the question regarding the Lachin corridor, which Yerevan is raising at the international level, is outside the CSTO’s area of responsibility, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas told RIA Novosti.
“There have been no such requests (from Armenia regarding the Lachin corridor), and we proceed from the fact that this issue is outside the CSTO’s area of responsibility,” Zas said.
Earlier, Armenia had informed the International Court of Justice about Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Lachin corridor, and had also applied to the European Court of Human Rights requesting interim measures against Azerbaijan and the obligation to unblock the corridor. The ECtHR had given Azerbaijan until 19 December inclusive to respond to Armenia’s application regarding the closure of the road.
The US State Department and the EU have called on the Azerbaijani side to unblock the Lachin corridor. Baku has described what is happening as a “protest by civil activists and environmentalists” against the “illegal exploitation of mines by the Armenian side.”
According to Russian Foreign Ministry official representative Maria Zakharova, Russia is concerned about the blockade of the Lachin corridor and hopes that transport links there will be fully restored in the near future.
