More than 200 Armenians who found themselves in a difficult situation in Syria after the powerful earthquakes wish to return to the homeland. The information was conveyed by Zareh Sinanyan, High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.
He stressed that one must be very tactful when discussing the issue of Armenians leaving Syria, since Syria is a friendly, brotherly state for Armenia.
But neither can one disregard the fact that many of the Armenians living in Syria want to return to Armenia.
“We already have the lists of our compatriots who want to leave Syria and come to Armenia,” said Sinanyan.
According to him, work is underway to bring Syrian Armenians to Armenia and settle them.
Sinanyan stressed that after the earthquakes, Syrian Armenians are in a difficult situation both socio-economically and psychologically.
“Although after the earthquake the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Armenia brought humanitarian aid to the Syrian Armenians, and 140,000 US dollars were transferred to community structures through the Armenia Fund, that is not a fundamental solution,” he said.
