According to HZ sources, a draft constitutional amendment is circulating within the National Assembly’s “My Step” faction, which, if adopted, would allow the National Assembly to dissolve itself.
The nature of the amendment is to add a provision to Article 92 of the Constitution, according to which early elections of the National Assembly would also be held in the event of the National Assembly being dissolved by a decision adopted by at least three-fifths of the National Assembly’s members.
It is also proposed to stipulate that early elections of the National Assembly would be held no sooner than forty and no later than fifty-five days after the dissolution of the National Assembly (under the current regulations, elections are held no sooner than thirty and no later than forty-five days after).
Under the current Constitution, early parliamentary elections are called only in the event that, after the prime minister’s resignation, the National Assembly fails to elect a new prime minister by a majority of votes of the total number of deputies within a 7-day period on two occasions.
The opposition factions do not agree to refrain from nominating a new candidate in the event of Pashinyan’s resignation, which theoretically means that after Pashinyan’s resignation, the National Assembly could elect a different prime minister.
