Shirak Governor Nazeli Baghdasaryan, along with representatives of the regional administration and the acting head of the Ani community, Arman Saribekyan, attended on 21 January the consecration ceremony of a new cross at Karmir Vank, the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator, located in the neutral zone of Haykadzor, a village bordering Turkey.
The cross was consecrated by the head of the Shirak Diocese, Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, after which it was placed on the dome of the monastery through the efforts of the residents of Haykadzor.
The church had been deprived of its cross in 2015 due to strong winds. The dome and cross of the church, which has endured many trials but remained standing, had been damaged in the 1990s, during the years of independence, when Turkey had already closed the border with Armenia.
According to records, the initiator of the church’s construction was Bishop Sargis, the head of Horomos Monastery. It was built by the architect Samehan between 980 and 985.
