Border point demarcation works are currently underway in the province of Syunik, which present certain complexities. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted this during a government session.
“Our conviction is that this work must take place, as it is necessary from the perspective of ensuring the security of Syunik and, in general, the Republic of Armenia. In any case, our position, the position of the Ministry of Defence, is that through this activity, which may give rise to the most varied interpretations, we are increasing the security guarantees of Syunik, we are forming a new system of security guarantees for Syunik and the Republic of Armenia.
Of course, we have two settlements there with which certain issues may arise; one concerns the settlement of Vorotan in Syunik province, the second is the settlement of Shurnukh, where there are certain border issues around which daily work is taking place. These issues may lead to certain painful situations, but I also want to assure that in all cases, if certain questions arise from the perspective of our citizens’ interests, the government will fully and unequivocally come forward with equivalent compensations, and our citizens’ interests will be fully protected,” said the Prime Minister.
The head of government also noted that in this regard, a disinformation leak is taking place. “I want to reiterate that there has been no talk, and there can be no talk, of conceding a single millimetre from the internationally recognised territory of Syunik and, in general, the Republic of Armenia; on the other hand, this does not mean that these processes should be considered demarcation and delimitation of borders; these are completely different matters,” said Pashinyan.
