The Head of the RA Ministry of Defense, Vagarshak Harutyunyan, spoke about the security situation created in the Syunik Province, answering a question within the framework of the “Zinuzh” television program as to whether the deployment of Russian border guards in Syunik could signify a loss of sovereignty for the RA.
“I want to remind that in 1992, when we gained independence, we began the process of joining the CSTO, jointly securing the borders with the Armenian-Russian joint forces, and signed numerous documents that strengthen our security. All these measures, documents, and actions have been aimed at strengthening our security, because we have such a threat in the region. We saw this in 2016 and now in 2020, when we saw that Turkey, together with Azerbaijan, is carrying out an attack not only against Artsakh, but also against our borders. And our primary task today is to ensure military security, which leads to the strengthening of our sovereignty and independence,” the Minister emphasized.
“The Russian Federation has a checkpoint, which is placed in the Goris section and in Davit Bek, and all movements must pass through that observation point. So, security is ensured here. The security of the Kapan front is also ensured in the same way,” the Minister added.
Referring to the presence of Azerbaijani military personnel near Armenian settlements, he said that the videos that have emerged were from a few days ago, and such incidents can occur because processes are underway, and there is nothing to be concerned about.
