Presidential candidate Vahagn Khachaturyan, especially taking into account the developments taking place in the region, sees a need for wisdom, stability, unity and trust. Khachaturyan expressed this view in his speech during the discussion of his candidacy in the National Assembly.

Khachaturyan first thanked the deputies of the Civil Contract faction for such trust, said he is moved to have been honoured in such a way, and hopes that the visions regarding the future of the Republic of Armenia will certainly be realised together.

“We simply have no other way. We are called upon to be able to ensure the security of our compatriots and lead our country along the path of development. Taking into account what I have listed, as well as today’s developments in the region, we now more than ever need wisdom, stability, unity and trust. In a rapidly changing world, where competition for various resources is becoming sharper, it is extremely important what kind of state we will be able to create,” said the presidential candidate.

He sees a need to rethink the present and organise at all costs to create a new dignified future, where a strong state is a reliable, fair partner of public need. Khachaturyan stressed that in any society, for those in a transitional phase, the role of the political system and economic institutions is more than important. According to him, the effectiveness of public administration, the cooperation of the different branches of government, and also the endurance of the state are conditioned by the effective functioning of state institutions.

Referring to Armenia’s political system, he recalled the norms enshrined in the Constitution, which provide for certain mechanisms of checks and balances, which are called upon to ensure the harmony of the three branches of government, aimed at the uninterrupted functioning of the system of state governance, regardless of circumstances. “In this system, the institution of the presidency also has its distinct place, which according to the Constitution is the head of state and oversees the observance of the Constitution. To assess reality, it is extremely important to free oneself from illusions, which will make it possible to accept that no political system can be ideal — both presidential and parliamentary systems of governance in all countries, with all their advantages, have certain shortcomings and omissions. If in one country or another democratic processes are not consistently implemented and strengthened, human rights are not respected, the interests of all groups of people are not protected, then democracy cannot develop and expand,” said Khachaturyan.
