The opposition “Armenia” and “I Have Honor” alliances lead in electoral charges.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, of the 24 defendants sent to court on electoral crimes during the snap elections, 10 are parliamentary candidates or supporters of the “I Have Honor” alliance backed by Serzh Sargsyan, and 9 are candidates or supporters of the “Armenia” alliance led by Robert Kocharyan. In total, 8 parliamentary candidates are in the defendant’s seat, among whom there are also candidates from the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), led by Gagik Tsarukyan, which did not enter parliament. Of the 24 defendants, including the 8 parliamentary candidates, all have been arrested.
The “Independent Observer” organization recorded almost the same picture, said its representative Daniel Ioannisyan.
“Law enforcement authorities are trying not only to do this work qualitatively, but also quickly, so that no doubt remains for the public that persons who committed electoral crimes will be punished. This is very important; this is a process that began in 2018. The Criminal Code has been amended several times with stricter provisions, and the approach of law enforcement authorities has changed,” Ioannisyan noted.
About three months after the vote, 39 criminal cases have still not been sent to court and remain in the preliminary investigation stage.
