In 2022, more than 25,000 people applied for Armenian citizenship, the highest figure in the history of independent Armenia. Hovhannes Aleksanyan, head of the strategy development department of the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, stated this on 13 February during a meeting with journalists.
According to Aleksanyan, the number of citizenship applications is growing year by year. In 2021 and 2022, the largest number of applications came from the Russian Federation. Prior to that, for years, countries of the Middle East held the top position.
According to Aleksanyan, obtaining citizenship is the most important step in the repatriation process.
“Repatriation does not mean only returning to the homeland, because they face numerous problems here, and solving them and integrating into society is very important for the repatriate. These problems are very broad; one should not consider only the acquisition of citizenship or the issue of having a residence status, but also the problems of finding a job and placing children in kindergartens or schools. Considering our limited resources, the figure recorded this year is quite good,” Aleksanyan said.
