A bipartisan group of 65 members of the US House of Representatives has joined the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues in calling for the allocation of $100 million in financial assistance to Armenia and Artsakh, following last year’s devastating Turkish-Azerbaijani attacks.
The American congressmen sent a letter to House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations Chairwoman Barbara Lee and Ranking Member Hal Rogers, as work begins on the fiscal year 2022 foreign appropriations bill.
In the letter, Congressmen Frank Pallone, Jackie Speier and Adam Schiff stated: “The assistance to be allocated for fiscal year 2022 for Armenia and Artsakh is critically important to help the people secure a safer future, advance democracy, ensure sustainable economic development, and combat COVID-19.”
In the letter, the congressmen call for allocating $2 million within the $100 million framework for a weapons destruction program in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Additionally, a call was made to suspend US security assistance to Azerbaijan, as long as the country has not assured that it will cease attacks against Armenia and Artsakh.
