Karo Paylan, Armenian deputy and member of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, has submitted a bill to the presidency of Turkey’s parliament proposing the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the removal of the names of those responsible for the genocide from public places, and amendments to Turkey’s citizenship law.
As reported by Agos, the justification for the bill submitted by Paylan states that Turkey’s Grand National Assembly must assume responsibility and call the Great Calamity experienced by the Armenian people by its true name. “The great crime must be recognized by Turkey’s parliament, and the victims of the Armenian Genocide must attain justice after 106 years,” the bill states.
Paylan had issued a message on April 24 in which he stated that attaining justice on the Armenian Genocide question is possible only in Turkey. “The Armenian Genocide took place on these lands, and justice on the genocide question is possible only on these lands. If Turkey were to face the Armenian Genocide, what the parliaments of other states say would no longer matter. For 106 years the Armenian Genocide has been denied, and for that reason it continues to be the subject of discussion in the parliaments of other countries,” Paylan had stated.
