The Sunday Angelus of 29 January 2023 was marked by a renewed appeal by His Holiness Pope Francis for an immediate solution for the Lachin Corridor, describing as “inhuman” the situation of the Armenian residents blockaded in Artsakh.
On 18 December as well, His Holiness Pope Francis had expressed his concern regarding the situation created in the Lachin Corridor, noting that he was “particularly concerned about the precarious humanitarian conditions of the population” and “the risk of their deterioration during the winter season.” The Holy Father had then addressed an appeal to those involved in the matter to “commit themselves to finding peaceful solutions for the good of the people.”
His Holiness’s concern and appeal were directed at the 120,000 Armenian population of Mountainous Karabagh, among whom there are 30,000 children.
The encirclement and isolation from the world carried out by the Azerbaijanis under “environmental” pretexts is a major threat of humanitarian crisis, and behold, one month later, His Holiness again raised his voice and once more appealed for a solution to the Lachin Corridor issue.
“I renew my appeal in view of the serious humanitarian situation prevailing in the Lachin Corridor in the South Caucasus. I am close to all those who, in winter, are forced to face such inhuman conditions. Every effort must be made at the international level to find solutions for the good of the people,” said Pope Francis in his appeal.
