Relations with Turkey must be normalised without preconditions: Grigoryan

“Armenia hopes to begin normalising relations with Turkey without preconditions, but all existing issues can be discussed later,” Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan told reporters after the September 24 government meeting. Asked how official Yerevan plans to normalise relations with Turkey when President Erdogan is, in effect, pushing a precondition by taking concrete steps towards the “Zangezur corridor,” after which he is to meet with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Grigoryan responded: “The Armenian side has stated many times, even before us, in the days of the previous authorities, that relations with Turkey must be normalised without preconditions.

Because when there are preconditions, it is difficult to make progress on any issue. And we hope that the normalisation of relations will be without preconditions, and that there will be an opportunity to start a dialogue without preconditions. All existing issues can be discussed later, but starting relations with preconditions will be very difficult.”

Responding to the statements of the President of Azerbaijan, Armen Grigoryan insisted that the Nagorno-Karabakh issue is not resolved, and the question of status awaits a solution.

In an interview with a Russian newspaper, Aliyev stated that raising the question of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status is harmful and dangerous for Armenia in its current dire situation.

“The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is not resolved, and the question of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status awaits its solution, and we see that solution within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. I believe that we will discuss status precisely within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group, and such statements by Azerbaijan are incomprehensible,” said Grigoryan.
