The lower house of the Parliament of the state of South Australia in Australia has officially recognized the right to self-determination of the Republic of Artsakh, condemning the act of invasion by Azerbaijan and Turkey of indigenous Armenian territories. This was announced by the Armenian National Committee of Australia, noting that the corresponding resolution was adopted by virtue of a vote held in the lower house of parliament.
This resolution followed an earlier resolution adopted in October 2020 by the legislative body of New South Wales, by which the state recognized the independence of Artsakh and “called on the Federal Government to likewise recognize the Republic of Artsakh as the only permanent solution to the conflict, in order to avoid a similar military attack in the future.”
The historic resolution put forward by legislator Tom Koutsantonis also stated that “the actions of Turkish President Erdogan and Azerbaijani President Aliyev, carried out within the framework of a policy of pan-Turkic nationalism, have previously led to genocide, and now threaten to carry out ethnic cleansing against the Armenian population of Artsakh.”
The Armenian National Committee of Australia expressed gratitude to the authors of the resolution, as well as to all those parliamentarians who voted in its favor.
