The Armenian army was formed during a difficult period when, on the geopolitical stage, the Soviet Union was living through the last months of its existence, and in Mountainous Karabagh the right to self-determination had set off the first tremor, to affirm which the Armenian people had to pass through war — through the turmoil of the Karabagh war.

In the general environment of the Soviet Union, the Armenian army, which had taken its first shoots, had no time to slow down, and on 28 January 1992, when by decree of the President of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia the Ministry of Defence of Armenia was created, the Armenian army was formed over the course of 4–4.5 years.

The Armenian army received its first “baptism of blood” during the various phases of the Armenian-Azerbaijani war, in the work of ensuring the military security of the populations of Armenia and Artsakh.

In this process, an active part was played both by the patriotic officers who had received their military education within the Soviet system, and by the Armenian volunteer movement, which became the backbone of the army.

And from June 1994 onward, the work of army-building, steady development, raising the combat readiness of the troops, strengthening discipline, and the training and retraining of mid-level and senior officer personnel definitively got under way.

Thanks to all this, today the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia are composed of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia and five army corps.

Just as yesterday, today and tomorrow as well, the Armenian army continues to remain the number one guarantee and pledge of the security of our statehood.
