Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, in an interview with the radio station “Komsomolskaya Pravda,” addressed the results of the negotiations held the previous day in Moscow between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and analyzed the situation created in the region, particularly the question of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to the politician, at the moment when the priority was to halt military operations, it was not the time to decide the question of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh. “That question was not resolved after this meeting either, nor was it even addressed,” said Zatulin, recalling that from the very beginning the question of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh has been the cause of the war and the negotiations.
“The question of determining the status of Nagorno-Karabakh is unlikely to move forward in the current situation, in the case of Armenia’s present condition, when its positions are called into question first of all in Armenia itself. Undoubtedly, Azerbaijan, emboldened by victory, is not ready today to make any compromise on the question of status… That is, the question of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is nevertheless the most important, is still being postponed to better times under the current circumstances,” added the Russian MP.
Let us recall that the trilateral meeting of Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan took place the previous day at the Kremlin. As a result of the trilateral meeting, an agreement was reached on creating a working group for the purpose of opening economic routes, which on March 1 is to present to the leaders of the countries a program for the development of infrastructure in the region. At the end of the meeting, Nikol Pashinyan stressed that the sides had not succeeded in resolving the issue of the exchange of prisoners of war, nor in discussing the question related to the status of Artsakh.
