Moscow views the European Union’s civilian mission in Armenia as an attempt to push Russia out of the region.
This was stated in a commentary issued by the official representative of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.
“By emphasising the exclusively civilian nature of the new mission, the representatives of the European Union are being dishonest. It is being deployed within the framework of the European Union’s common security and defence policy, and therefore it must be treated accordingly.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have recorded the desire of the European Union and the entire West to entrench itself in any way in our ally Armenia.
In these attempts we see exclusively a geopolitical subtext, which is far from the interests of a genuine settlement of relations in the South Caucasus. Everything is being done to push Russia out of the region and to weaken its historical role as the main guarantor of security. Baku’s publicly expressed negative assessments of this initiative are being ignored,” Zakharova’s statement said.
According to her, the European Union’s experience of participation in the settlement of various regional conflicts is not particularly successful, and this should be taken into account when assessing the European Union’s decision regarding the new mission in Armenia.
Zakharova confirmed that the package of agreements between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia remains the main factor of stability and security in the region for the foreseeable future.
