The European Union, on 20 February, launched the European Union civilian mission in Armenia under the Common Security and Defence Policy. This was reported by Armenpress, citing a press release issued by the European Union.
The mission was formally established by a Council decision of 23 January 2023.
“The objective of the deployment on the Armenian side of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border is to contribute to stability in Armenia’s border regions, build confidence and security in conflict-affected areas, and ensure an environment conducive to normalisation efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which will be supported by the European Union,” the statement said.
The European Union added that, in total, the European Union mission’s exclusively civilian personnel will include approximately 100 persons, including around 50 unarmed monitors.
The mission’s command centre will be in the town of Yeghegnadzor in the Vayots Dzor province of the Republic of Armenia. Stefano Tomat, Executive Director for Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability at the European External Action Service, will serve as Civilian Operations Commander, and Markus Ritter as Head of Mission.
