Citizen’s Day of the Republic of Armenia is celebrated on the last Saturday of April. On 21 March 2019, the Government of the Republic of Armenia approved amendments to the RA law “On Holidays and Memorial Days,” in which it was proposed to establish Citizen’s Day as a new holiday.
RA Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan had noted that the need for the holiday “is conditioned by the unprecedented political events that took place in Armenia in April 2018 and the velvet revolution that followed. According to Zeynalyan, proceeding from the need for the speedy resolution of numerous socio-economic, legal and political problems, thousands of citizens carried out protest demonstrations and marches for days, placing their demands before the authorities.
On 9 April 2019, the RA National Assembly adopted the law on making an addition to the RA law “On Holidays and Memorial Days,” as a result of which the new Article 4.1 of the RA law “On Holidays and Memorial Days” established the Citizen’s Day holiday. According to that article, Citizen’s Day of the Republic of Armenia is celebrated on the last Saturday of April.
In the event that 1 May coincides with a Saturday, Citizen’s Day of the Republic of Armenia is celebrated on the last Sunday of April.
