The legislature of Paysandu, one of Uruguay’s largest provinces, unanimously recognized the independence of Artsakh with 28 votes in favor.
In his speech, the president of the legislature, Hermes Pastorini, a representative of the Communist Party, noted the brutality of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and, taking into account the severe humanitarian situation in Artsakh, proposed recognizing the independence of Artsakh, which was adopted unanimously.
This is the first official decision in Uruguay regarding the independence of Artsakh by a body formed through direct democratic vote.
Very few Armenians live in Paysandu. The two Armenians present at the session, Sandra Navadyan and Asatur Chekmezyan, presented the flag of Artsakh to the president of the legislature after the vote, and it was decided to place it on the main table.
The session took place at the House of Culture of Paysandu, given that construction work is underway in the chamber of the legislature.
From reliable sources, “Azatutyun” has learned that the authorities of Armenia and Uruguay are in direct and active contact, discussing the attacks being carried out against the Armenian people in Artsakh and all possible solutions.
Regarding the recognition of Artsakh’s independence, representatives of the Armenian community of Uruguay have held meetings with the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Bustillo, and members of the parliament’s foreign relations committee.
The government of Uruguay had weeks earlier condemned the attacks against the Armenian people in a special statement.
