The delegation headed by RA National Assembly President Alen Simonyan met with Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Brad Sherman, and Republican Chris Smith.
Gregory Meeks noted that since 2018 they have been following the democratic processes underway in Armenia with particular attention. He also expressed readiness to continually support those reforms.
During the meeting, issues related to the 44-day war and its consequences were discussed. The American side stated that the US House of Representatives and particularly their committee is deeply concerned about the fate of the prisoners of war and believes that they must be returned to their homeland immediately. Meeks stressed that it is extremely important to ensure stability in the South Caucasus and, in that regard, it is necessary to reach a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and a lasting settlement of the issue. The United States greatly contributes to that, including through the OSCE Minsk Group format.
The National Assembly President invited the Chairman and members of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs to visit Armenia to become acquainted with the existing problems and democratic achievements.
